NT printer from RH7 - NT thinks it's Unix?

Post by Tx » Tue, 11 Sep 2001 23:05:38

Hi all,

I tried to set up a shared printer resident on an NT4 server from my red hat
7 box. Following the red hat instructions for installing an smb printer, I
got completely garbled output with only small parts recognisable. After much
unsuccessful messing about, just for a laugh I tried setting the queue type
to 'Unix printer (lpd queue)' instead of 'Windows printer (smb share)' in
Printconf, after which it printed perfectly!

Is there something I should know about the NT4 server? What's the deal?

NT and 2K come with a BSD-derived program that presents a "standard
Unix" lpd interface.  Your NT admin may have set this up, as it makes
sense for the print server to speak lpd if there are Unix machines on
the network.

That makes sense, there's an old SCO server on the network, not really used
now though. Pretty handy feature, I'll have to learn how to set that up
myself. Thanks for the info.
