SCSI optical disk problem

SCSI optical disk problem

I get the following message from during the linux startup when the
kernel is trying to figure out what scsi devices i have.  The one that
it locks up on is a chinon 128mb optical disk system.  The drive works
under win95, and the scsi card (adaptec 2940uw) sees the drive at the
initial bootup.

I am using Caldera Open Linux Base, which, i believe, is based on a red
hat distribution.  The current kernel is 2.0.25.  The messages i get are
as follows :

****************************

Mar 25 17:44:41 edwin kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout :

This will repeat forever, or until i switch off the drive (whichever
comes first).  Is there something i can do with the drive to make it
work, or with the code to makeit work?  or am i just sol?

Thanks,
edward
