Does the latest release of Redhat Linux (version 5.2) support the Matrox
Millenium G200 (8MB memory) AGP video card ***out-of-the-box***?

Thank you in advance,

Yes.

Nothing really to do with Redhat.

AGP G200 is supported by X. Not sure the particular X server is
supported out of the box for RH5.2. So maybe the answer above is "No"
:-) But you can find the right server under SuseX. You will find this
topic covered several times in the archives.

Sort of.  The XFree86 version in 5.2 (3.3.2) does not directly support
it...it will run but it isn't accelerated.  The XFree86-3.3.3 release
incorporates the SuSe G200-specific acceleration.  I haven't seen 3.3.3 in
rpm form anywhere yet, however, the SuSe matrox-specific version is
available in rpm form.

Is supported with Accelerated-X. Look at http://www.xig.com/ for more
details.
Have a friend who had installed it and it worked right out of the box.

No.

You need XFree86 3.3.3

I'm about to buy a PC with the G200... I take it that Linux
will be able to use it to display its console, boot up sequence
etc?  I.e. does the above quoted text mean that the G200 is
*only* supported under (certain) X servers?

They are referring to using it in X. Not on the console. The console
just relies on standard VGA (usually) and therefor you should be
fine. As the previous author suggested, SUSE has an X-server
for this card available (and I think it might be included in
XFree86-3.3.3).

1. Redhat 5.2 and Matrox Millenium G200 video card

I have Redhat 5.2 and a Matrox Millenium G200 card.  Can anyone
explain how to get X to work with this.  Ive already done this:

1) got xmatrox.rpm and installed it using "rpm -ivh xmatrox.rpm".
2) got xsuseconfig.tgz and installed that too (in /usr/X11R6) --
should I have done that?

When I try Xconfigurator, it now shows my Matrox card, but when I
select it, I get:

Server doesn't exist, can't continue.
tried to use ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_XFCom/Matrox

What now???
Thanks for any help!
