man can't format new man pages - can't find DESC file

Post by Lou Poppl » Fri, 18 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Yesterday I upgraded from term version 2.2.9 to version 2.3.5.
The upgrade included new man pages, but I can't view them with man.
For all of the new pages, when I type (for example) 'man term', I get:
Formatting page, please wait...
/usr/bin/groff: can't find `DESC' file
/usr/bin/groff:fatal error: invalid device `ascii'
/usr/bin/gtbl:/usr/local/man/man1/term.1:478:fatal error: output error

I had no problem with the man pages from version 2.2.9 of term, nor with
any of the other man pages in my system.  The system is rather old,
linux 1.0.9 from slackware.

When I run 'man -d termtest' I see a bunch of normal looking stuff, then
the following (line breaks inserted for readability where you see "{+}")
using default preprocessor sequence
found tbl(1) directive
Formatting page, please wait...
not executing command: (cd /usr/local/man ; /usr/bin/gtbl /usr/local/{+}
man/man1/termtest.1 | /usr/bin/groff -Tascii -mandoc | /usr/bin/col {+}
| /bin/gzip > /usr/local/man/cat1/termtest.1.gz)

Any advice appreciated..

man can't format new man pages - can't find DESC file

: Yesterday I upgraded from term version 2.2.9 to version 2.3.5.
: The upgrade included new man pages, but I can't view them with man.
: For all of the new pages, when I type (for example) 'man term', I get:
: Formatting page, please wait...
: /usr/bin/groff: can't find `DESC' file
: /usr/bin/groff:fatal error: invalid device `ascii'
: /usr/bin/gtbl:/usr/local/man/man1/term.1:478:fatal error: output error

groff reads /usr/lib/groff/font/devascii/DESC
(a short file with contents for example:
res 240
hor 24
vert 40
unitwidth 10
sizes 10 0
fonts 4 R I B BI
tcommand
postpro grotty
); the directory devascii should also contain the files R, I, B, BI.
You might specify a different path with GROFF_FONT_PATH. See groff(1).
In case you lost devascii but not devlatin1, try -Tlatin1 - that should
be the default anyway.

[But does this mean that you cannot get any man page anymore?]

Thank you very much.  Apparently I got a little over-zealous in deleting
unwanted files... (my entire /usr/lib/groff directory is gone)...
I will restore it from backups.

: [But does this mean that you cannot get any man page anymore?]

Man pages that had previously been formatted could still be viewed.
The missing files only prevented formatting new man pages.
Thanks again.
