Audio mixer for /dev/audio or USB audio?

Post by Ulrich Stelz » Tue, 25 Dec 2001 09:13:12

Hi,

does anyone see a possibility for controlling /dev/audio? Is there
even a tool?

Background:

Im running a 2.4.13 kernel with a USB * (ToUCam Pro). The
built-in microphone is supported through the USB Audio class (and
accessable via /dev/audio). Everything works pretty well except audio
quality. The sound is scratchy on higher levels. All I want is to
lower the input level. The tools I have, smix and amixer, only
correspond with my soundcard (/dev/dsp).

The machine is a PC with SuSE, not a SUN/SPARC.

Thanks in advance
Greetings from snowy Berlin

Ulrich

If your distro doesn't have it, get the source for aumix and build it.
Works very nicely.

And thank Santa Claus that you aren't in Bavaria on the autobahn in
meters of snow :-)

Thanks Dave, at the end your tip brought me to the solution.

With aumix I couldn't talk to /dev/audio (actually it is /dev/audio1)
directly.
But accidently I found out, that it is behind /dev/mixer1 !

So now I can change the input level for the camera mic with:

$> aumix -d /dev/mixer1 -m30

and
$>aumix -d /dev/mixer1 -q     # shows the current devices/values for mixer1

The value 30 should be changed according to the appropriate situation.
The mixer number may vary on different systems depending on other sound
devices already installed.
Unfortunately aumix fails with the graphic for this mixer device so there is
probably only this command line possibility.
I use aumix 2.7 but older versions ones should do the same.

Hope this helps other users with the same problem.
All the best for New Year.

Ulrich

1. Crash in audio.o (USB Audio)

Hi,

I tried getting USB audio to work with Apple's USB speakers on Linux
2.4.17.  When I tried to access the audio device, the USB module would
crash.  The USB system appears to properly identify the speakers and their
capabilities.

I've done searching on the Internet and I can't find anyone else who's
tried this recently.  Is this a known problem with USB audio and recent
Linux 2.4 releases?

If this is a known problem, I'd be happy to look into it and try to
(possibly) fix it.  Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Erik.
