Making fortune files

Making fortune files

Post by Matt Hol » Thu, 20 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I have the "fortune" program installed on my Linux Slackware
2.0.29.  It works just great.  My only problem is that I want to add some
text for it.  Looking at the files it uses, they seem to be plain text
delimited by a % on a new line.

However, how do I get the fortune program to use an additional
text file?  Apparently a .dat file goes with each text file containing
data.  Do I need one of these, too?

Look for "strfile" and execute it with strfile (mytextfile). On my
box, strfile was installed in /usr/sbin (meaning it wasn't in the default
path of Joe User). strfile will then create a .dat file that can be
used with fortune.

1. Making files for fortune program?

Hi all. Is there any page that explains how to make database file for the
/usr/games/fortune program? The man page doesn't say anything about that.

Thanks.
