3Com 3C590 PCI card & Linux?

Post by Stuart Luppes » Sat, 11 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I am planning to install Linux on my new Micron 100 MHz Pentium
machine. I went and bought a 3Com 3C590 PCI bus master ethernet adapter
*AND THEN* read the hardware compatibility HOWTO and the ethernet HOWTO.
Dumb. Anyway, I couldn't find the 3C590 mentioned in either HOWTO. Does
anyone have any experience with this? Advice? TIA.

The 3C590 works great under Linux. Get 3c59x-new.c from Donald
Becker's web page. http://www.veryComputer.com/

Go down to '3Com 100Mbs "Vortex" PCI ethercards' (Yes I know it's
not 100 Mbps) and click on it. Then click on "updated Vortex driver".
That's the file you want.

Ok, and then what?  I have it running on the 1.3.32 kernel but don't know
how to get it to compile in later versions.  Any help appreciated.  TIA

I got it to work in a 1.3.40 kernel making it a module that I load on startup.

You must have an ancient version of the E'net-HowTo. The 3c590
driver has been available since march, and it has been in the
Enet-HowTo since may. You have to get it from Donald's ftp/www
site and install it yourself.

Paul.

1. Drivers for 3COM PCI Ethernet Card (3C590)

Look at http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
and let me know if it works for you.

I have tried to install the modules, but my 3C590 PCI card
is not detected at boot. I get the message:

bios32_init: BIOS32 Service Directory structure at 0x000fa000
bios32_init: entry in high memory, unable to access

I guess this is a PCI problem?
Have anybody had the same problem?
Any help are appreciated.

Well, I have a Compaq Prolinea 590, and a
Diamond Stealth PCI card that works fine.
I have tried both kernel 1.2.13 and 1.3.56.
