Probabily you have mounted the partition like an MSDOS partition,
try using a VFAT partition that support long filenames.

I guess you must have compiled in the support for the vfat support into
the Kernel, or load it via module.
then you have to mount the partition with:

mount /dev/xxx /mountpoint -t vfat

This should work.
