I'm still having trouble getting my modem to work with linux. It answers the
phone and connects, but it doesn't let me connect to the machine. There is
no notation in /var/adm/messages or syslog that [uu]gettty has even picked
up the line. I installed getty_ps-2.0.7e from sunsite. I have a 14.4 modem
on com2. My inittab contains the following

# Serial lines
#s1:45:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 19200 vt100
s2:45:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 19200 vt100

# Dialup lines
#d1:45:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 38400 vt100
d2:45:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 38400 vt100
--cut here--

here is /etc/default/ttyS1:
CLEAR = NO
HANGUP=YES
INIT="" ATZ\r OK
WAITFOR=RING
CONNECT="" ATA\r CONNECT \s\A
--cut here--

Anything else I need?

Why don't you try mgetty ?
Only *s persist with getty_ps .

I have gotten the modem to pickup and had the same problem in initaly to over
come the problem i would start below with the serial lines... I dont think you
have to enable s2 and d2 one or the other... d2 for modem s2 for a direct
serial connection like that of a vtXXX terminal.

The default worked fine for me...

Note that i changed the getty to uugetty. uugetty seems to work better on
modems getty kept *... th modem connected and everything but i had the
same problems you did. Well There you go...

First of all you have to decide what to use the ttyS1 line for:
either for tty-terminal connection or the modem. Assuming, that you want to
use the modem, take the "s2:45:respawn...." field off, adding either the "#" in
front of it or replacing the "respawn" by "off".

I don't know if a "d2:..." line will work as it is.
In a similar attempt I am using either the "uugetty" or "mgetty" programs.
The "uugetty" line would look as follows:
d2:45:respawn:/sbin/uugetty ttyS1 38400

And then, in "/etc/default" you should use a "uugetty.ttyS1" file instead
the "ttyS1".

I found that the uugetty I used with slackware pro 2.1 wanted to see this
uugetty.ttyS1 config file in /etc rather than /etc/default as specified
in the getty_ps docs. You might want to recompile getty_ps or check for
the proper desired location if your modem does not INIT properly.
