Modem hangs up by it's self

Modem hangs up by it's self

Post by Michael Reuver » Fri, 06 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I finally figured out how to connect to my ISP (had the wrong IRQ) but now
my modem is* up for no apparent reason. Here are a couple of logs.
Any suggestions? Thanks for all the help!

First the stuff about the compress modules is almost certainly
irrelevant.  I started getting that under RH6.0, but it
doesn't seem to affect my connection.

The remaining messages suggest some problem with the conversation
between your chat script and the ISP.   It looks as if the ISP
is not getting what it expects and is cutting you off.

Modem hangs up by it's self

Looks like you may be timing out?  What program are you using to make
the connection.  I use diald without problems.  I have configured it to
shutdown after 1 hour of idle time.

I can help you with the "can't locate module xxxxxx" complaints.

Add these lines to /etc/conf.modules
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp

Modem hangs up by it's self

Post by Matt Col » Wed, 11 Aug 1999 04:00:00

There's two likely causes for this -- line interference, which would make your
modem hang itself up, or your ISP is kicking you off after too much idle time.
As per the timeout scenario, I usually keep Licq running (free ICQ clone for
linux, if you're not familiar with it) -- it'll ping Mirabilis every so often,
keeping the connection alive.

If it's line interference, then there's not a whole lot you can do about it.

If you want to track down the real cause of it, get a hold of your ISP's sysop
and have them send you the logs for the date and time you got kicked off -- it
should show whether or not you got kicked off because of line interference or
because of a timeout (or for some other reason...someone just being plain mean?
:-) )

As for the 'can't locate module ppp-compress-2x', try:

cd /usr/src/linux
make ppp-compress-21; make ppp-compress-26; make ppp-compress-24; make
modules_install

I can't say I've tried this myself, so I don't have any idea whether it will
work or not, but you can give it a shot.

Best of luck,

Matt Cole
