Help Needed - Printing Problem

I bought and installed Slackware 96 Linux for my P133 in Dec 96 and have
never been able to get the HP Deskjet 540 up and running with Linux.   It
works fine under Win95 on the other partition of the 2.5Gb HDD.   I
installed most of the the install package options and have read the
printing.HOWTO document.   I put a lp:dj:Deskjet entry in the /etc/printcap
(as advised in the printing.HOWTO) and included a shell filter program to
put a line feed in at the end of each line.   The lpd daemon is loaded and
spooling commands seem to work - status shows that the lp has worked.
When I use the Generic lp line in printcap the printer takes a couple lines
only of the text (sent as lpr filename) with the staircase effect, and then
nothing else.  With the deskjet lp1 active, I get no errors reported and
nothing from the printer.    I have run out of problem solving ideas.
Has anyone seen this problem or can suggest anything else to try.
Thanks,
Steve Huckstepp

glad top hear that someone is having the same problems as me (sorry).
I got hold of the the HOWTO  and followed that as far as I could, then
had to 'break out' on my own. If you want to know more e-mail me at

Printing Problem - No Print

I had the same problem trying to write the right lines in my /etc/printcap until I
installed apsfilter. Apsfilter is on one of the Slackware96 CD:s among the
Sunsite stuff. If you have the book Linux installation and configuration, it's on the
second CD in the directory /sunsite/system/printing/. Installing apsfilter puts the
lines you need in your /etc/printcap. Try apsfilter. It works with my LaserJet4L.
