"mount -o bind" - "fs type none not supported" error

Post by Dan » Fri, 14 Mar 2003 06:43:47

I'm currently trying to experiment with installing Gentoo on my Debian3.0
SparcStation 5 and have hit a problem in that whenever I try and run "mount
-o bind /proc/ proc" I get an error of:

abraxas:/mnt/gentoo# mount -o bind /proc/ proc/
mount: fs type none not supported by kernel
abraxas:/mnt/gentoo#

This is running the stock Debian 2.2.20 kernel. Is there another way of
mounting the proc system that will solve this problem? Alternatively if
someone could let me know what I need to compile into my kernel to be able
to support this I have no problems recompiling it if I know what to put in
:o)

Thanks for your help

Dan

It's trying to mount it as type "none", because you haven't specified a
type, and it can't guess.  Try doing "mount -t proc /proc /proc", the "-t"
option lets you specify what kind of file system it is.

You might also want to make sure that the fstype for /proc in the
/etc/fstab isn't set to "none", but to "proc".

I had always used it like this though it may work the same.

mount proc /proc -t proc

try --bind instead of -o bind

Try this:
mount -t proc none proc
