Netscape text goes crazy

Netscape text goes crazy

Post by <thesun.. » Wed, 15 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I'm running RedHat6.0 and using the Netscape version included in the
distribution.  After starting Netscape and viewing a few pages, the text
goes all funny--it starts writing over itself, the colors change, etc.
This problem ALWAYS begins with Netscape, but then will "leak" over into
the other applications--the KDE menus, the toolbars, the clock.  The only
way I can get rid of it is to logout completely and log back in again.
I've got Linux running on several systems, but this only occurs with this
one.  Is this related to the Java problem?  Any help would be greatly
appreciated.  Also, though I'm not a newbie per se, I've found much of the
advice given can be pretty cryptic.  Please don't worry about insulting my
intelligence by giving precise, clear, and specific information.  Many
thanks.

I also have the same problem using an S3 Virge DX graphics card, and
always assumed it had something to do with that.  My solution to the
problem is just to switch to console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, switching
back to X by pressing Alt-F7 and moving to another part of the virtual
desktop area and back again.  Seems to work, but I have no idea why.

I have seen the same problem with RedHat6.1/Enlightenment/GNOME/Netscape4.6

I found the following on RedHat support (Security Advisory - Netscape):

(1999-10-08)
The original packages released for Red Hat Linux 6.0 and 6.1 had an error
in the post-install script; the 75dpi font directory was accidentally removed
from the font path instead of added. This is fixed in the updated packages.
Users of the previous packages may wish to run (as root):

  chkfontpath --add /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi
  /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart

as opposed to downloading the new packages, as the package contents
have not changed.

I only applied the above a few minutes ago so have not been able
to determine if this corrects the font problem described...

Just some ideas:

Does not sound like a java problem. Can sound like a graphics driver
related problem, perhaps as simple as a setup thingie. Upgrading to
Redhat's later release of Netscape can't possibly hurt (4.7) - however:
To force a screen refresh in X try typing "xrefresh".
(/usr/X11R6/bin/xrefresh)
Might provide temporary help. But your system seems to allocate less
colors than what your applications desire...for some reason. What kinda
of graphic card are you using and how much memory does it have? Some
graphic cards use of the mainboard RAM which occationally get people in
trouble.

An idea could be to upgrade all your XFree stuff, reconfigure the cards
setup with Xconfigurator or something, and see if that helps. Upgrades
available from http://www.redhat.com/errata

To see what mode you run in and get a hunch whether you've configured
the card correct you can write "xdpyinfo". Color distortions like this
can happen when you're on the "edge" of what your card has/access RAM
for. You should also try forcing your X to start with other colordepths
just to check whether the problem is relevant for all colormodes:
For instance with
startx -- -bpp 16
Or 8, 16 or 32 - whatever settings you've prepared for in XF86Config
setup file.

1. netscape = going crazy! help!

I've recently installed a newer vesion of netscape and am having several
problems with it.

1.) BackSpace key doesn't work.  I've tried messing with xmodmap and remapping
it but that didn't work other.  (either) can't backsapce

2.) I get tons and tons of errors on start looking like this:

warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: osfLeft
Warning: ... found while parsing '      ~Meta ~Alt ~Ctrl<Key>osfLeft
Columnleft()

this it said on start:

This is usually because the proper XKeysymDB=08file was not found.
You can set the $XKEYSYMDB environment viariable to the location of a file
which contains the right keysyms.

without the right XKeysymDB, many warnings will be generated, and most keyboard
accelerators will not work.

(an appropriate XKEysymDB file was included with the Netscape distribution.)

then it gives me tons and tons of those errors that I described before.

my current C=08XKeysymDB file is in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/, and is the one that came
with netscape.

ideas? :)

scuse my poor spelling and sloppy letter, my backspace key does NOT work :)
