Does Linux support ATI Mach64 card in non-accelerated mode

Post by Hayim Hendel » Wed, 21 Sep 1994 02:16:24

I am considering purchasing an ATI MACH 64 graphics card. However, as
Linux does not yet have support for this card yet (I know there is
an Alpha driver available for those willing to be on the bleeding
edge of technology), I am wondering if I can use this card under
Linux in non-accelerated mode (e.g. as a Mach32 or whatever which
is supported). This will get me by for the meanwhile until Linux
can take advantage of the features of this new card.

Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

The alpha driver is fairly stable.  It is not an acclerated
driver though.  I have been using it for a few weeks without
any problems.

Where can we find this alpha driver? Once I get Linux onto my 1Gig IDE disk
(LBA translation problems aside) I'll be trying to get X working with my
ATI Mach 64 card.

Cheers,

Stuart.

1. Qn: Does XF86 support ATI Mach64 Xpression in accelerated mode

I wonder if the XFree86 can support (in accelerated mode) the ATI Mach64 Xpression card with 2Meg DRAM.
In the HOW-TO file, ATI Mach64 is listed in the unaccelerated support category while the ATI Mach32 (Graphics ultra pro) is in the accelerated support category.
So, I believe that the ATI Mach64 is at least supported by XFree86 (please correct me if I am wrong). By my understanding, Mach64 should be faster that Mach32. Also,
a card with accelerated support is better than one without accelerated support. So, for an ATI card to be used with a Pentinum motherboard, which card is better?
What is the difference in performance for accelerated and unaccelerated support?

You help is greatly appreciated.
If you happens to have the ATI Xpression card, please email me a copy of your XF86 config file.
