Problem with make on Caldera 2.3 linux box.

Post by Patrick La » Wed, 19 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hi all:

Using the same makefile, I have successfully compiled a set of code in
Solaris, but not in Caldera 2.3 (kernel 2.2.16).  The error I got from
Linux is:

makefile:168: *** missing separator.  Stop.

What does this error mean?

Also, how do I see what version of glibc I am using?  Would it cause
this problem?

Thanks very much in advance.

Patrick.

Check that line number and just ahead.  Make sure your file still has
hard tabs where they were in the original, and that there are no \r
characters.  e.g. if you ftp from unix to a Windows box, set binary
mode.

Thanks very much Tim.  Everything seems right in the makefile, except that
I did not quite understand the following:

What did you mean by "line number and just ahead"?  What kind of line
number should I be looking for?  Sorry that if this is a stupid question.
I have been so stuck with visual c++, and am currently encouraged to try
linux development.

Thanks again.

>Using the same makefile,

How did you transfer the file?  Perhaps it got mangled in transport.
Also, Solaris make and gnu make are not 100% compatible.

Line #168 in the makefile probably has a command that is indented with
a space instead of a hard tab.

bogus: some-stuff
        $(CC) $(CLFAGS) $<

The second line above has to be indented with a tab rather than with
spaces.

"rpm -q glibc", and no.

1. Caldera 1.3 vs Caldera 2.3

It's a amjor upgrade. The biggest thing is that COL 1.3 is built on the 2.0.35
kernel and COL 2.3 is based on the 2.2.10 kernel. The 2.2.x kernel supports a
wider range of hardware, including PCI sound cards, USB and quite a bit more.
There are a whole lot of other improvements at various levels... too many to
list. COL 2.3 also has a much simpler, graphical installation routine -- a plus
for a first-time installation, and if you buy the commercial package, it comes
with a lot more additional software.

Now, there are people out there who'll use COL 1.3 and just upgrade the kernel,
but you don't want to do this if you have no experience with Linux. Go with COL
2.3. You'll be happier, and you'll be more likely to become a concert from that
other OS.
