I thought this would be easy!

I have a Redhat 5.2 system. How does /etc/rc.d/rc.local get executed?

I've looked in /etc/rc.d, including rc and rc.sysinit.
I've looked in /etc/rc.d/init.d.
I even looked in /etc and /etc/init.conf.

It's magic?

Look in the /etc/rc.d/rcX.d/ directories. See links like this:

 lrwxrwxrwx  1 root   root  11 Oct 12 17:45 S99local -> ../rc.local*

The ones with an 'S' get started, the 'K's are killed.

And the first part of the magic are these lines in /etc/inittab.

l0:0:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 0
l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1
l2:2:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 2
l3:3:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 3
l4:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 4
l5:5:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 5
l6:6:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 6
   ^  This is the runlevel

You can then check /etc/rc.d/rc and see how this procedure calls the
scripts in /etc/rc.d/rcX.d/ directory.

1. which user does /etc/rc.d/rc.local / rc.sysinit run as?

Im running Enigma and want to set up a systemwide fetchmail daemon ... I
have got the /root/.fetchmailrc file set up fine and need to know where
to put the 'fetchmail' command.

Should I put fetchmail somewhere in either /etc/rc.d/rc.local or
rc.sysinit?  Whereabouts should I put it in?  Are there security risks
here I should know about?
