"Starting lpd..." failure at boot/start-up

Post by MM » Thu, 24 Oct 2002 14:41:15

Hi.

Sometimes (not always!) I get this error message when i boot/start my PC
running Red Hat Linux 8.0:

"Starting lpd: 2002-10-22 17:54:23.153 localhost Get_Local_host: 'localhost'
IP address not available."

(Of course date and time changes...)

I have no idea of what this means or indicates. The boot/start-up takes a
looong time when this error message appeares. As I said, it does not always
appear.

So, anyone knows what this is? Is there something I can do about it?

Best regards,

    MM

Then show us what is in /etc/hosts, and we may be able to tell you.

"Starting lpd..." failure at boot/start-up

Ok, this is what I have in my /etc/hosts (three lines, between the -----:s):
-----
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
-----

In my /etc/host.conf I have this one line:
-----
order hosts,bind
-----

So, is this info enough, or shall I look for something else?

Regards,

    /MM

1. Cant get "lpd" to start

I can't get the lpd daemon to start, and after checking every manual and
on-line document I can find, I'm out of ideas.

I have been running Red Hat Linux release 3.0.3 (Picasso) / Kernel 1.2.13
on a i486, since this June (no UNIX/Linux experince prior to that time).
 Everything seems to perform properly except the lpd daemon -- it wont
start.

Im running a HP LaserJet 4P printer on /dev/ttyS0 and it works just fine
when I redirect to it, e.g.  cat file >/dev/ttyS0.  Also, when I lpc
status, I have files queued to print that I lprd.  The kernel is built
with the printer parallel port ON, although Im not using LPTx and dont
plan to.

I tried starting /etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd.init from the control-panel
runlevel editor, and get the following stack trace error:

        couldnt execute etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd.init: Exec format error
                while executing
        open |$root/rc.d/init.d/$leftselect $what r
                invoked from within
        set f [open |$root/rc.d/init.d/$leftselect $what r]...
                (procedure runcom line 22)
                invoked from within
        runcom start
                invoked from within
        .executeit.start invoke
                (uplevel body line 1)
                invoked from within
        uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]
                invoked from within
        if {($w == $tkPriv(window))
                        && ([$w cget -state] != disabled)} {
                        uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]
                        }
                invoked from within
        if {$w == $tkPriv(buttonWindow)} {
                set tkPriv(buttonWindow)
                $w config -relief $tkPriv(relief)
                if {($w == $tkPriv(window))
                        && ([$w cget -state] ...
                (procedure tkButtonUp line 3)
                invoked from within
        tkButtonUp .executeit.start
                (commend bound to event)

Im still on the steep part of the learning curve, and cant interpret
the problem from the above.  Id appreciate any help or suggestions.

Thanks!
