Assuming that you're sysadmin on the machine, then yes.  Replace fingerd
with kfingerd.  It allows customization of the response, including

aren't allowed, instead), phony usernames ("finger

called by a finger, and logging, among other things.  It's pretty nice.

No, I've nothing to do with the program.  Just use it.

I read the lsm for cfingerd and kfingerd, which were both suggested by people and the lsm
for cfingerd insinuated that it was a whole lot more secure than kfingerd and others.
Anything substantial to this or am I just being paranoid?  I'm very interested in the
options that both give, but I don't want to rush into anything.  Thanks.

cfingerd can, if configured correctly, run a shell script when
fingered.  You can set up a different shell for any number of
non-existent users.  An interesting idea is to play a sound file

If you implement this, please email me the script.

cfingerd, available from

The documentation should be enough to answer all questions.

1. broken finger utility

i can 'finger' but i can not 'finger user' without the -m option.
with the -m option, i can obtain some information.  i get
'segmentation fault' from running 'finger user'.  i thought this
was a memory problem, but running top, and then emliminating some
of the huge processes produced no change.  does X, being a huge cpu/
memory process, have anything to do with this problem?  is finger
seriously broken?  and if so, can this be fixed?  thanks for any input.
