GAIM segfaults with MSN

Post by Grant Edward » Wed, 02 Jul 2003 10:24:39

I've had zero luck getting GAIM 0.64 to work with MSN.  I've
tried:

RH 7.3  built from source tarball
Mdk 9.1  binary RPM from gaim.sourceforge.net
Mdk 9.1  built from src RPM from sourceforge
Mdk 9.1  built from source tarball

I've tried building with and without gtkspell.  All I ever get
are segfaults as soon as I try to sign in.

Anybody have any clues to lend on what you have to do to get
GAIM to work with an MSN/hotmail account?

Try running gaim on the command line, I think with -d option you might
track down where it crashes. I don't have any issues with it.

... i had the same issues; was running .62, went to .64 and
then got the issues. i thought, "how can i fix this?". and
then i remembered, "do NOTHING M$ related". so, i removed
the hotmail account and everything works :)

for you, i'd say go back to .62

I've found two different seg-fault locations.  One is due to
code handling the LST response from the server: it expects at
least 7 parameters, but it's only getting 5.

Either somebody broke the MSN code pretty badly recently, or
the protocol has changed out from under it...

I'm currently checking out a CVS tree again, but the first time
I did, the wouldn't even configure a Makefile.

#gaim on freenode reports thus in its topic:
0.64 msn bug fix: http://www.chipx86.com/gaim-0.64-msncrashes.diff

That should solve your problem. Get the sources, apply the patch,
recompile (I suggest you run `dch -i` then `dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot`
to do that then install the resulting .deb), and it should fix your problem

Sorry about the `dch -i` and `dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot`suggestion. I
thought I was in linux.debian.user - those are debian packaging commands.

Yup -- I've got debian systems too. Thanks for the pointer.  I
built the current CVS snapshot, and that problem was fixed, bit
it still segfaults when a SOCKS4 connection fails.  Not sure if
it works when the SOCKS4 connection succeeds...

1. GAIM MSN Icons

Hi,

I just started using GAIM and MSN IM service (without ever having used MSN
Messenger) and came across an icon that wasn't listed on the GAIM site. It
was an little icon of a window (the kind that you have in houses to see
outside :-) It appeared to the left of a buddy in the Online Buddy list.  It
only appeared for what seemed like a few seconds. After that the buddy
disappeared from the Online list, indicating that they logged off.

Could anyone tell me what that icon means ? Does anyone know where I could
get a list of these icons ? As I said before, I've never used the MSN
Messenger and I don't have access to a Windows machine.

I checked the MSN site to see if they had a list of the icons, but I didn't
find any such list. I also checked the Google Groups (formerly known as Deja
News) and found one article where someone asked a similar question, but
there was no response.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks-O-Ton !

'later...
