How to monitor network activity ?

How do I monitor network activity?
In one of the old versions of Red Hat, there was a graphical way to see
how much data is streaming in and how much of data is going out, with
blue and red graph lines.  I'm still able to see that when I use the
modem dial up service.  However, when I switched over to cable internet
service, I can't seem seem to monitor the network activities.
I have Red Hat 8.0.
Thanks.

p.s.
I have Red Hat 8.0 connected to the cable internet, and it provides
internet access to three other computers.  If I were to upgrade to Red
Hat 9.0, would I see performance benefits?  It aint broke, so why fix it?

Which program were you using? It should still work.

You'll patch security holes - red hat dosen't give up2date service to old
versions IIRC.

I don't recall the name of the program.  It was in the System Tools
menu, but not anymore, and I can't seem to find it.

iptraf is good.

That would be the KPPP applet. Try 'stripchart' that comes with gnome, or
MRTG

When I issue the command iptraf, I get the "command not found" error.
Same with stripchart and MRTG.
Can you give some more specific instructions?
Thanks.

You must install the aforementioned packages before you can actually run
them. I am quite sure all those packages come with Red Hat.

Make sure that they are not installed in an odd place, not /usr/bin,
/bin or normal default search paths for programs, but instead
/usr/sbin/ /usr/share  and the likes. This seems to
catch a few people out, especially the newer linux users. Try (assuming
your file database is up to data (updatedb))

$:>locate iptraf

our what ever you are looking for, if the list is too long to see then

$:>locate iptraf |less

And finally if it is a program like, those mentioned above

$:>whereis iptraf

This might help at least to track down where the files are! To run the
hidden programs give the full path name!

1. tools for monitoring network activities & traffics

Is there any tools in public domain that can monitor the
network activities and traffics? (says, tcplogger, nfswatch,
snmp, ... etc). We have some Ultrix DEC and SunOS SUN servers.
These servers and their clients are linked up
by SynOptics 3000 concentrators. We would like to tune up our
network but we need to have some data of our network activities
and traffics first.

I would very appreciate it if anyone could inform me these tools
via e-mail. Thanks.
