boot problem (kernel panic)

Post by atsoren.. » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I tried to update my RH 6.0 system to 6.2.  After running the
installation program (the "upgrade" option), LILO tries to load linux,
and everything freezes with the following error message(s):

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device 08:0b
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:0b

I get the same problem if I try to boot using the boot disk created by
the installation program.

Everything was fine before I tried the upgrade.  Also, I can boot up in
Windows NT just fine using the DOS option in LILO.

The BIOS recognizes my SCSI drives just fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

1. Booting problems, kernel panic...

I've been trying to install slackware, I use the kernel 1.2.13, and I
followed the step programs of infomagic... Everything worked well during
the installation, then I reboot and it crashed. I' m using a driver for
my quantum sirocco 1.7 gigs because my motherboard doesn't support more
than 504 megs.

        My configuration is:
                        486 dx2-66 amd
                        8 megs ram
                        quantum 1.7 sirocco
                        quantum 270 megs
                        cd-rom panasonic + sb16
                        supraexpress 28.8
        My disk structure is:
                /dev/hda1  ms-dos...
                /dev/hda2  linux swap
                /dev/hda3  linux native
        The error on screen is:
                hda: bad access: block=0, count=1
                end_request: I/O error, dev0303, sector 0
                HPFS: map_sector: read_error
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:03

Thanks in advance.
