Problems with 'xmh'

Problems with 'xmh'

Post by nad.. » Sat, 14 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Hi

I installed with slackware 2.3.0 a few months ago.  As a stand alone
box I've never really had to use mail facilities.  As soon I'll start
needing this facility I decided to try out xmh ( elm & pine seem to work ok )

I have the following problems when I startup xmh (either clicking from
Goodstuff or from the commandline # xmh & ):

(1) upon startup I get a window prompt saying:

        +--------------------------------------------+
        | msgchk command returned:                   |
        |                                            |
        | msgchk: (cannot execvp it)                 |
        | errno = 2; No such file or directory       |
        | exiting.                                   |
        |                                            |
        |             +--------------+               |
        |             |  Acknowleged |               |
        |             +--------------+               |
        +--------------------------------------------+

This message pops up every few minutes ( rather anoying! ) and pops up
upon selection of other menu items.

(2) When I try to compose a message ( wether in 'drafts' or 'inbox' ) the
application just exits with a 'beep'.  If I start it from the command line
I get the following after it exists:

xmh: No such file or directory
xmh: Error in FOpenAndCheck(/root/Mail/drafts/.xmhcache, r)
errno = 2; No such file or directory
exiting.

Now, I have

# ls -lRa  /root/Mail/
total 17
drwx------   4 root     root         1024 Aug 11 13:52 ./
drwxr-x--x  28 root     root         3072 Oct 13 11:31 ../
drwx------   2 root     root         1024 Oct 13 11:45 drafts/
drwx------   2 root     root         1024 Aug 11 13:50 inbox/
-rw-r--r--   1 root     root          389 Jul  4 19:08 pablo
-rw-------   1 root     root         4322 Jun 22 10:21 root
-rw-------   1 root     root         2683 Jun 22 10:21 volkerdi
-rw-r--r--   1 root     root           37 Aug 11 13:52 xmhdraft0
-rw-r--r--   1 root     root           37 Aug 11 13:52 xmhdraft1

/root/Mail/drafts:
total 3
drwx------   2 root     root         1024 Oct 13 11:45 ./
drwx------   4 root     root         1024 Aug 11 13:52 ../
-rw-r--r--   1 root     root           37 Aug 11 13:52 1

/root/Mail/inbox:
total 2
drwx------   2 root     root         1024 Aug 11 13:50 ./
drwx------   4 root     root         1024 Aug 11 13:52 ../
-rw-r--r--   1 root     root            0 Aug 11 13:53 .xmhcache

+---
Now, from 'man xmh' .....

If you do not already have a .mh_profile, you  can  create
one  (and  everything  else you need) by typing ``inc'' to
the shell.  You should do this before using xmh to  incor-
       porate new mail.

For more information, refer to the mh(1) documentation.

Hmmm well no, I do not have a .mh_profile and there is no `which inc`
and further ... there is no mh(1) manual page!  I mean really!

I realise that there are other X based mail packages ... but it would be
kinda neat if the Goodstuff was "good" ;) and that it came properly setup
in slackware  ( at least it appears to me that way! )

Any assistance/ideas with this issue are most welcome.

Cheers,
Rob.

[snip of my problems]

Hmm, I'm quite happy to run elm, pine or what I'm playing around with now,
the Xemacs-19.13 mail service ... but I would like 'xmh' working alright.

TIA, cya ...
