AVI encoder for linux?

AVI encoder for linux?

Post by Modn » Wed, 23 Jan 2002 20:11:07

Hi, can anyone tell me if there is any way that I can encode AVI files
in linux? I urgently need to know, as I don't want to end up using a
windows box for the task.

Unfortunately mpeg won't do due to a couple of reasons.

Thanks.

there's a prg called transcode, which works fine.
With mplayer comes a tool mencoder and for dvd encoding there a
project called dvdrip (www.netcologne.de/~nc-joernre) which is a perl prg
and installable via CPAN shell (it uses transcode)

some say the quality is better with the m$ tools, but I don't know.

cheers

That's the mplayer page, the mother of all players and encoders.
Transcode will only encode, but it has some tools that mplayer (or
mencode, rather) currently lacks, which allow you, for instance, to split
or merge avi files, which comes in very handy when you've created an avi
just over the limit of your cd.

Be warned though, that to install these programs you kinda need to know
what you're doing, or read the documentation very carefully (mplayer has
very good documentation, don't know about transcode). But that's the fun
of it, isn't it? And once you get it going it's fine. If you want to
point and click, stick with windows.
