Updating the kernel is small beer, providing you don't run your system
way down level. Just check you have all the stuff, see
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes. I find that something you want to
run suddenly will not more often that the other way round, that's why I
keep bang up to date when I can and my machine is stable.
I need a stable machine to do my work stuff, so go for it.
