ftape ECC errors

To answer my own question, I looked in group linux.dev.tape mentioned
in the Ftape-HOWTO.  Someone suggested running swapout (in the recent
Ftape distributions) before insmod:

swapout; insmod ftape.o

Well, that fixed it!  (for LInux 1.2.13). Of course, I don't know
what I'll do for Linux 2.0; perhaps when I reupgrade, I'll just keep
ftape.o as a separate module (I think it lets me do that).

ftape ECC errors

I've been getting ftape "ECC failed (0 CRC errors, >1 CRC failures)"
errors. I can rewind/retension, but can't read or write a floppy tape.
I get an "I/O error" message. This is ftape 2.07 on Linux 1.2.13 with
the ksym and io.h patches. It used to work, but I failed to noticed
when it stopped working. Any ideas? (Log follows).

IN /var/adm/messages, I have:

1. FTAPE Problems: ECC-Failure in Segment >= 4

Hi Folks !

I have some trouble using the QIC-80 tape driver on my Linux-Box.
Using preformatted tapes I can only read the first three segments w/o
errors. In segment four I have uncorrectable ECC-failures on _all_ tapes.
This does not change when I try several formatting programs under DOS
(And thats really boring). I have heard about different obstacles on
the way to a happy tape user, but this one seems to be my private
version. Does anybody have some hints for me ? Please reply directly
to my E-mail address, I can not read every single article in this
news-group.
