You need TCP/IP for term. I believe that's in the networking packages.

Yes, you need to recompile your kernel to add TCP/IP support (unless your
kernel is already supporting TCP/IP ofcourse)

Take a look at a file called /etc/services. There you find a couple of
columns in which the first three are the most interesting.
The order is something like below:
name of service port no used service protocol comments
There you find each service (ftp, rwho etc) together with its port no
