Problem with Midnight Commander

Problem with Midnight Commander

Post by Dmitrij Sverdl » Mon, 22 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Hello!

I've got a problem whith the internel editor of Midnight Commander (version
3.5.17-1): It does only start on pressing Shift-F4, i.e. when editing a new
file. On pressing F4 for an existing file, mc starts vi to edit the file.
The option "Use internal edit" is set.

Thank you for answers,
        Dmitrij

Fast solution:  edit your system-wide mc.ext - there is a line that
tells mc to use vi by default (see the end of mc.exe)

Better solution:  upgrade to mc-4.0.x - they have corrected this and
many other bugs.

Version 3.5.17 is since looooong outdated.  MC has seen two major
releases in the meantime and has currently been released as mc-4.1!
Please upgrade as soon as possible and try again.  This problem should
most certainly be fixed since very long.  For sources and binaries
(tar.gz/rpm/deb) check out "ftp://ftp.nuclecu.unam.mx/linux/local/".

Deducing from the version you use i'm suspecting you are running the
very old official MC version included with the current "Debian-1.3.1".
And since you are obviously located in Germany you might be interested
to download a ready made "mc_4.1-0.1_i386.deb" from our FTP site
"ftp://ietpd1.sowi.uni-mainz.de/pub/debian/unofficial/" (debianized
source code is available as well).
                                    Cheers, P. *8^)
