You might do a search for "Filesystem Hierarchy" and see the document
that's supposed dictate what gets created in /.   /opt is standard,
and is for optionally-installed software; /lost+found gets created in
in filesystem that gets fsck'd.  Can't say where /initrd and /misc
came from -- they're not in my RH 7.1 install.

/initrd is created when general filesystem is created, and to use RAM
disk (man initrd).
/misc is created by autofs package since one of default autofs mounting
point is /misc from /etc/auto.misc.
When you have a doubt of the origin of a file or path, use rpm -qf.

Regards.

: /lost+found gets created in
: in filesystem that gets fsck'd.

And it's best to leave it there; otherwise files will not
get put there when fsck finds they were misplaced somehow.

For the others, I'd be surprised if they are really empty
directories all the time.  Perhaps you weren't logged in
as root, and some files were hidden from you?

1. how to move a package from /opt to /OPT?

Hi,

I have the following problem: the answerbook was installed on a local
disk in /opt/, however now the local disk is named /OPT/.  How can
update the package information and tell the system to look in the
/OPT/ directory instead of /opt/ without going back to the CD-ROM?  It
looks like I need to change the BASEDIR variable.  Editing
/var/sadm/pkg/SUNWaadm/pkinfo and /opt/SUNWaadm/ab_cardcatalog doesn't
look like the right solution but I found no command for this.

Thanks for any help,
        Joerg Hoehle.
