PCTEL WinModem

PCTEL WinModem

Hi,

I finally managed to get my PCTEL WinModem (56Kbps download and 33.6Kbps
upload) running on my Linux machine as a dial-in.  Since the modem is
designated as a dial-in, I am wondering if anyone know how to hack the
source code for the PCTEL WinModem driver so that the speed will be in
reverse, i.e. a 56Kbps (or 52Kbps) upload and 33.6Kbps download.  I don't
have a problem to reduce the download speed from a 56Kbps to a 33.6Kbps
because most modem that connects to my dial-in service PCTEL modem can only
go as high as 33.6Kbps.  It certainly will be a plus if the PCTEL modem can
be reprogrammed as a 56/56Kbps (upload/download).

TIA.

This isn't controlled by software.  This is the actual DAC/ADC hardware
that exists on the modem.  You're stuck at 33.6Kbps (upload).

The upload/download speeds are fixed by the V.90 standard.  If you were
to take two normal 56k modems, and dial into one from the other, you
would actually be limited to 33.6k in both directions.  You can only send
at 56k if you are running through a digital phone line as most ISPs do.

Furthermore, the PCtel driver, although it may seem that way, is not
available in source form.  The "source" release is merely binary object
code which can be re-assembled against the version of the kernel which
you use.  So modfiying it is not practically possible.

So, there is no way to make any 56Kbps modem to provide a 56Kbps upload
stream and anyone who is still using a 56Kbps dial-up is stuck with 56Kbps
for download and 33.6 Kbps for upload with one 56Kbps modem.

1. PCTel WinModem with pctel-2.4.7 Driver

Hi,

I have installed two units of pctel winmodems on my linux machine.  The
pctel-2.4.7 driver only recoqnizes one of the pctel modems.  Has anyone had
tried the pctel driver to drive more than one pctel winmodems?

While at the subject, is it possible to program the pctel modem to generate
a dialtone so that I can connect some devices to the modem port to dial
into the modem (no need to have a telephone line emulator)?

TIA.
