How to install filesystems on a dos - formated floppy-disk???

Post by Marce » Mon, 21 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hallo,

Does anybody know what i have to do in order to install a minix
filesystem on a dos-formated floppy disk? My floppy-drive is mounted and
works perfectly (I had a look at the boot-disk which was created
automatically during Linux installation). So, as the filesystem was
installed automatically, then, there is surely a way to do it manually,
or not??!!

Please help me!!! or I'll lost my last nereves.       Thanks,

Hi there!
it's easy yust type mkfs.minix /dev/fd? (the ? stays for which floppy
drive u want 0 for a: under dos and 1 for b: under dos). If that does'nt
work try this: mkfs -t minix /dev/fd?. Have a lot of fun!

Take care.

        Best regards,

To format a minix filesystem onto a diskette in your A drive your use
fdformat /dv/fd0        #if it needs a low level format
and
mkfs -t minix /dev/fd0 1440 #to add a minix filesystem on the 1440
blocks of a 3.5" floppy.
There are other ways too, sort of.
The B drive is /dev/fd1 and you can put other filesystems onto a
floppy, eg ext2fs but that can be wasteful unless you really need 256
byte long filenames. If you can make do with an msdos (FAT)  floppy
tou can use mtools (mdir, mcopy, etc) to readwrite dfloppies without
mounting them explicitly.
