HELP: DOS boot disk does not recognize my hard disk!!!

Post by Tianlin WAN » Wed, 19 Jul 1995 04:00:00

I used  fdisk command under Linux  to repartition my
SCSI hard disk into four primary partitions as follows:
partition  boot   start   end    system
   1        *       1     400    msdos
   2               401    900     linux  native
   3               901    965     linux  swap
   4               966    2047    linux  native

I have successfully installed Linux.
Now problem is that I can not install MSDOS, because dos
boot disk does not recognize hard disk. I am wondering
if this is caused by unformatted msdos partition. If
it is true, then how can I format msdos partition under Linux?

Any help and hints would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Well, if your boot disk has the DOS system on it, you shouldn't
have a problem.  Just make sure whatever AUTOEXEC.BAT file you have on
the disk does NOT try to access C:, as it will fail.  You will need
the FORMAT.COM program on your boot disk.  Just boot from the floppy,
then format from the floppy, then you should be able to switch to C:
with no difficulty.

1. booting a DOS partition on the second hard disk under RedHat

I am trying to boot DOS from second disk.
Here is what I found in "Essential System Administration" AEleen Frisch
1995 p.650:
[section on Linux] (...) an alternate loader, any_d.b, which tricks DOS
into thinking it's on the C: drive.  There are also loaders provided for
OS/2 (...) (os2_d.b ... )

Now, my RedHat 6.2 came with the os2_d.b loader, but without the anyd_b
one.  Please tell me-if you know-
--Did the procedure for doing what I want changed since 1995 (and if
so, how?), or
--does RedHat 'know better' how to do it (how exactly?), or
--do I just need to find an any_d.b loader somewhere (and if so, where?)?

thanks
