SCSI bus reset with Adaptec AIC 7880 Kernel 2.2.13/14 ...

Post by Graham Nicholl » Tue, 25 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I have a twin pentium pro machine with 128M RAM.  It has an on-board
AIC-7880 2940 Ultra Wide SCSI controller.  When I install
SuSE 6.3, it installs fine, and if I select the right kernel, will boot
fine.  When I build a kernel from source using the options in the
attached file, the boot fails after initialising the SCSI controller -
it gois into a reset loop, waiting for pid 0 device 0 lun 0.

I have tried with a Buslogic controller (not on-board - a PCI board).
The attached file is a boot message from the OK kernel installed by SuSE
(_excellent_ distribution, BTW, IMNSHO), as well as my .config file from
/usr/src/linux.  I have tried setting aic7xxx override_term:0x00, 0x01,
0x02, and 0x03.  (there is only one controller in the machine), as well
as experimenting with stpwlev set to 0x01.  No change.  I have tried
changing the termination settings on the card from HIGH on/Low On, to
Off/Off, and On/Off (all possibilities).  The bus is terminated by a HDD
on the wide section, and a CDROM on the narrow.  Incidentally, the
system was running file with 2.0.3x kernels.  The disks are IBMs, and I
have tried replacing them, but to no effect.

Help!!!
Thanks
Graham.

1. SCSI Reset with Adaptec AIC-7880 and SMP

I have a dual processor Micron box with an on-board Adaptec AIC-7880,
which works fine with RH 6.0.  I have had no joy however in booting an
SMP kernel.

In all cases with SMP, the system gets as far as probing the SCSI bus
and then goes into an SCSI Reset loop:

  ...
  scsi : 1 host.
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id
0, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out - trying harder
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
  ...

I have tried the RH 6.0 SMP kernel (2.2.5) plus 2.2.10 and 2.2.13
kernels which I have built myself - no joy.  I have tried compiling
aic7xxx both as part of the kernel and as a module loaded from initrd.

The system is SCSI based, so booting without SCSI is not an option.
This also means that I can't capture dmesg output.

Any suggestions (no matter how wild) would be appreciated.

Thanks,

     T.
