Help: XFree86, ATI Mach64 PCI (newer model)

I thought this wouldnt work.....

This is the only linux-newsgroup available to me, so forgive me
for posting help here :)

Im trying to get X running on another server than vga16!
There aint room for much on the screen now...

I'm running Slackware 3.0 with 1.3.20 kernel with X ver 1.2.13
on an ACER p75 PCI.

XF86_Mach64(old) hangs on startup
ramdac unknown
Clockchip: Bedrock
It really hangs - screen locks in some weird modus - and stays there.

XF86_Mach64(E) - the same

So I tried XF86_SVGA(E):

ATI 264CT graphics controller detected
Chip type 0053 (CT), class 0, revision 0x9.
Sparse I/O base is 0x02ec
ATI Mack64 video adapter detected.
Internal RAMDAC (subtype 0) detected.
Unknown clock generator detected

- there is nothing on the screen,
and clocks=75.0 - just one clock.

After putting in some clocks in XF86Config, there was something on the

The upper 1/3 appeared normal, the bottom was random noise...
Black with cute-colored speckles..

There was an obvious banking problem - or something like that,
when pulling down a menu - it appeared in bits and pieces all over the
upper 1/3......

I pulled out the card: here are whats on the parts:

One big chip: ATI Mach 64 215CT22200
Smaller one : PCI Mach64 113-32103-103 (c)1995 (in socket)
Then 2MB of memory.
A jumper, JU7, REL I/O in pos DISABLE
Another , JU4, ENA INT, not set.

Plz help ......

I don't know if our experiances are similar but I had no end of trouble
with my ATI Mach 64 card. (Linux 1.2.13 X11R6)

If it is a help I attach the much stripped down XF86Config, which I
finally got working. It only has the one resolution but it may be worth
a try.

Help: XFree86, ATI Mach64 PCI (newer model)

You need the 3.1.2E drivers for the ATI Mach64.  Download it from your
nearest ftp site.  Else email me, I'll go and search mine out.

Its got nothing to do with your kernel and PC.

The ATI Mach64 has a programmable clock chip.  Do not allow Xconfigurator to
autoprobe it.  Simply skip that step and it should be fine.  I had the same
headache a couple of months back till some nice experts here point me to the
3.1.2D driver for Mach64, that expired a while ago and the one I am using
now is the 3.1.2E

Contrary to what some users say, I simply replace just the Mach64 driver
with the 3.1.2E, the rest is still the 3.1.2 distribution from by Red Hat
Linux CD.

I must qualify that I am still very new to Linux and XFree86, any further
comments from experts would be nice.

1. ATI Mach64 PCIQ: ATI Mach64 PCI, Xwindow problems ?

You should install XFree86 3.1.  Its Mono, VGA16 and SVGA servers include
(unaccelerated) support for Mach64's.  For an accelerated server, you'll
have to wait until XFree86 >=3.2.
