This list is the result of my not finding any document giving suggestions
for names of computers. I posted a query on this to comp.os.linux.misc
news group and gleaned the following from various responses and also
racking my brains.
So, here goes :

A. Read the RFC 1178 (dated August, 1990).
B. Avoid using names of persons (or potential person names), if possible.
C. Computer names should have 4-6 alphabets (not more than 8 unless you
cannot do without having such a long name).
D. Acronyms of projects, departments, name of city of work and then adding
numerals is a common practice for naming computers. Using pc1, pc2, pc3,
pc4, sun1, sun2, hp1, hp2, dec1, dec2, ... is also common.
E. Preferably use a theme and pick names according to that. Some examples
follow :
