Wow. After reading that this game is supposedly based off of Rescue
Raiders, I was shocked to see that you are using an already (often) used
storyline. Why does everything have to surround nuclear weapons and Iraq?

 Okay.. Now for my ideas.

 1) Storyline:

  a) Ditch Iraq. Let's go for something a little bigger. Since this is the
future, combine the Middle East in to something like the United Arabic
Nations. (U.A.N. also gives a hint of a greater super-power..)

  b) One man starts World War 3? Ugh. I can see it over someone like the
President, but an archeologist? Let's not go there. Something like "Recon
satellites show massive buildup of forces at several key military bases in
the [nation of question]."

  c) Since I'm taking shots at the story, I'd rather see the main hero not
playing the part of traitor. Send him in to see why there's so much
activity at those military bases.

Sorry to be so critical of the storyline, but I'm getting tired of good
games either having a pathetic excuse for a story, or using the same old
thing.

 Last suggestion:

I read a lot about vehicles, and similarities to Quake.. How about the
ability to take a grunt inside the target building for some man to man
shooting ala Quake/Duke3d? You can have grunts retrieve specific items..
(Intelligence files, secret weapons, etc..)

Anyhoo, my $.02 on it..

Uh, making the enemy every Arab country is likely to be found very
offensive to many people. Iraq would make sense since we recently went to
war against them, but making out All Arabs=Evil is bad.

I couldn't agree more.

Anyway, its not clear what kind of design ideas they're looking for. Mission
guidelines, bios for different grunts in your squad, 3ds meshes for enemies,
or what?

Crack dot Com Seeks Design Ideas for Golgotha

Crack dot Com, who quietly brought you the dark scroller Abuse, is
coming
out of the 2D closet!  You were wondering how we could take a boring old
formula like 2D side-scrollers and bring them into the 1990's?  You
thought
Abuse's freaky lighting, in-game level-editor and powerful LISP engine
were
wild?  Sure we were the first to release a game for DOS, MacOS, Linux,
Irix,
and AIX, but you literally haven't seen anything until you see what
we've
done in 3D.

Crack is developing Golgotha, its first 3D action title under
development
with bleeding-edge texture-mapping technology and a new method of
strategy
gameplay giving you command over allied units!  Crack is seeking design
ideas for the game.  These include:

Weapons and vehicles ideas, for example:?rail-gun tank, sapper
vehicle,
anything you can describe that can be generated using only a few
dozen
    polygons.  Sketches welcome but unneccessary.
  Power-up ideas, for example:?engine speed power-up, invisibility,
invincibility.  There are a lot of creative things you can do with
an engine
without overhauling it or adding a lot of work.  Even a description
in terms
of hit points and armor class is welcome.
Gameplay mechanism ideas, for example:?Every time you die, you must
pay $3M
and wait 15 seconds, every time you kill someone, your new kill
ratio is
announced over the radio.  Again, descriptions are sufficient, but
sometimes
design sketches to show a scenario can help, too, if the gameplay
idea is
    complex.
Ideas for network features, for example:?An expandable chat window,
support
for double-elimination tournaments, how to recognize/organize teams,
etc.
You can go wild with these ideas.  This is one of the most
fascinating new
    areas of game design.
Special effects ideas, for example:?When you blow up a vehicle, lemme
see an
anime-style "white ball"?explosion, let's hear dopplar shifting when
a
missile whizzes by, etc.  These are tough, but especially if you're
familiar
with the resources &?time available to most coders, you can
definitely come
    up with some killer ideas.

You will first want to consult the web page
http://www.veryComputer.com/,

before
submitting ideas.

Yeah- Iraq's been beaten to death with a scud. Setting up a scenario where
Iran finally conquers Iraq (that's been *d for years by
international sanctions) and starts making threatening moves on Saudi,
well, it wouldn't
exactly be new, but it would be somewhat believable (and have a touch of
irony- the fix to one problem leading to a larger problem, etc).

"...Iranian forces have begun moving towards the Saudi border, and
intelligence reports that they have supplies sufficent for a 3-month
campaign- gentlemen, this looks like it's for real."

Quote:>   c) Since I'm taking shots at the story, I'd rather see the main hero not

Or a flat-out preemptive strike on either the main force, or the supply
areas supporting that force. Lots of missions where the goal is to get in,
plant bombs, get out, assassinate specific enemy commanders, disabling enemy
nuclear/biological weapons, and full-on combat.

Seriously, once you have a good reason on how to get someone into a
situation, you can do whatever you want- the original idea could grow out
of an 'rescue american civvies stuck in enemy territory' mission, and go
from there with as much wierdness as you want (the archaeologist awakens
Great Chtulhu? Sure...). But to throw in things like that in the basic
premise weakens the overall story.

Makes two of us.

Oh, yeah- and please keep the HTML off UseNet.

Still not very readable.  ^_^

Anyways, I love the concept of somebody updating RESCUE RAIDERS.  I
don't know how many hours I sat in front taking my troops all the way
through both the Apple ][ version and the old Macintosh version (the
new 8-bit hack really works!  Can actually play it on my new PCI
clone!).

Concept of the super-tank...still wish it was a 'copter.  One of the
funnest things to do was try to land all your troops in the middle of a
tank and watch them blow it up from behind.  ^_^  Paratroopers RULE!

I think you need to add powered infantry that you can deploy.
Deployment from your vehicle was a powerful attack and defense weapon
that really help make Rescue Raiders what it is was.  Not many games
allowed you to personally deploy troops in such a manner.  Unlike the
engineering vehicle, these will not be as heavily defended.

About the "hero" being a traitor.  Kewl!  Sort of like the Shadows and
EarthDome, eh?

How will the game be setup?  Guess some sort of quasi-3D playfield?

I agree, but you kinda got to pick on someone.  Who would
be less offended?  I can see it now:

        Destination: Elbonia
        Objective: Overthrow King Dogbert

It would involve the DNRC, mud, pigs, shaven ducks,
slingshots plus side encounters involving geeky
engineers, and the pointy-haired one.

Those are the elements of high adventure.  Sign me up.

High adventure? You want high adventure? Like pirates, swordfights, battles
of wits, heroes, villains, princesses, torture, miracles, and true love?
Dude, set Golgotha in Guilder and Florin! (Apologies to S. Morgenstern).

In all seriousness, though, you should feature America's natural enemy:
France.
