If you read the README.linux file carefully, you will note that Dave
is already aware of the problem.  His description of the magnification
option(s) (-1, -2, -3, etc. on the command line) concludes with
something to the effect of "this turns out to be a bad idea on Linux".

: This was just updated and linux doom is out. If you don't have
: a Pentium though I wouldn't bother wasting the ftp time. Even
: in the smallest window size it ran like a dog on our 486/66
: with 16M of RAM. The readme file acknowledges that it will be
: slow and says that it was released anyway due to peer pressure.
: This is actually a bit disappointing as we only have 3 Indy's or
: 2 PC's and wanted a 4-way deathmatch. The DOS version won't network
: with the SGI version but I hoped that the Linux version would :-(

I just tried it today on my 486/40 and performance was quite
acceptable.  The graphics for the -2, -3 and -4 options were hosed
though, unless this is supposed to be new Underwater Doom.

Yog Sothoth Neblod Zin,

Larry Mulcahy                       That cult would never die till the stars

would take Great Cthulhu from his tomb
to revive his subjects and resume his rule of Earth.  The time would be easy
to know, for then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones free and
wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men
shouting and killing and reveling in joy.  Then the liberated Old Ones would
teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and
all the Earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom.

Are you sure?  I construed that line to mean that Linux took a
performance hit, rather than meaning the modes didn't work at all.

If they didn't work, and he knew it, why'd he leave them in?  Why mention
them in the README?

Logic indicates ...

I have a feeling that if there'd been an easy way to fix the problem, it
wouldn't have been there (it even said that pixel-doubling didn't work
right in the README.linux file).  Personally, I think the option should
have been removed if it couldn't be implemented correctly, but perhaps
that's just my opinion.  Besides, I'd rather see the DOOMWADDIR problem
fixed before anything else.

My opinions may have changed, but the fact that I am correct has not.

That's four messages so far that report that pixel doubling is trashed.

Gee, even though the README says "no bug reports," does anyone think iD
can be convinced to fix this?

It is even fine on a 386/40 with 8MB, if the image details are
set to LOW in the OPTIONS menu. As the screen resolution I used
a homemade 320x200 with the SVGA XFree server on an ISA ET4000.

I suggest "wasting" the ftp time, even if you don't have a
pentium ;-)

Ciao,

Does anyone else have the problem that the status window with the
guy's head and health doesn't show up? I just get the whole window
filled with the dungeon view and have no idea how much health is left.

Thanks, Steve

Steve: hit ESC, go to Options, select Screen Size and decrease it one notch.

: Yep, runs great, But setting detail-level to low makes the picture
: squeeze to half width. I'm using a cirrus 5428 card for VL-bus and the
: SVGA-server (Xfree 2.1). Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes.  I've seen it on both the Linux and SGI versions.  Anyone know
why this happens?  Sort of annoying if you want to speed up your machine
by lowering the detail, since it doesn't really work.
