RedHAt 5.0 doesn't play cd music, but RH 4.2 will

sndconfig runs fine. It correctly gets the soundblaster to work.
However, I cannot play cd's with xplaycd in RH 5.0 even though it seems
to read the tracks.

When I reinstalled 4.2 and recompiled the kernel, it worked.
When I recompile the kernel for 5.0, I don't get the same options.

Here is /etc/conf.modules from 5.0
alias eth0 3c59x
alias sound sb
options -k sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1,5
alias midi opl3
options -k opl3 io=0x388

HEre is /etc/soundconf from 4.2

/*      Generated by configure. Don't edit!!!!  */
/*      Making changes to this file is not as simple as it may look.    */

/*      If you change the CONFIG_ settings in local.h you       */
/*      _have_ to edit .defines too.    */

#undef  CONFIG_PAS
#define CONFIG_SB
#undef  CONFIG_ADLIB
#undef  CONFIG_GUS
#undef  CONFIG_MPU401
#undef  CONFIG_UART6850
#undef  CONFIG_PSS
#undef  CONFIG_GUS16
#undef  CONFIG_GUSMAX
#define CONFIG_MSS
#undef  CONFIG_SSCAPE
#undef  CONFIG_TRIX
#undef  CONFIG_MAD16

#define MSS_IRQ 11
#define MSS_DMA 0
#define DSP_BUFFSIZE 65536
#define SELECTED_SOUND_OPTIONS  0x00a80202

Any ideas?
I wish there was someway to override some of the stuff in 5.0.
I don't think it is 5.0 problem, but a kernel 2.0.32 problem.

I think I have to get it to use the Windows Sound System to get
xplaycd to work right.
But I don't know how with kernel 2.0.32.

Thanks!
Mark

RedHAt 5.0 doesn't play cd music, but RH 4.2 will

Mine works fine, Sound Blaster 32 xplaycd. Easiest thing I installed on
Redhat5.0. Using the sndconfig I kept selecting different io=0x999 and
interupts until I had voice at the end. Some times setting the dma to 0 will
help.

RedHAt 5.0 doesn't play cd music, but RH 4.2 will

<snip the steps you've taken>

Have you chmod'd the symbolic link /dev/cdrom to the appropriate setting?
I know that sounds incredibly obvious, but if you'd done it once in 4.1
and then installed RH5 you may find that your /dev entries have changed
somewhat. I can't remeber what the setting is, but if you run xplaycd from
an xterm it'll let you know (and print a nice polite message thanking you
when you've made the change!)

Also, you might want to try and play some samples -- it is possible that
although you have maanged to get the soundcard working it isn't
initialised during bootup....

Hope that helps,

Simon

When you run xplaycd from a terminal, a phrase asking you to chmod 666
/dev/cdrom pops out... I did that and it works when I'm not root. Is this
secure (my system is local to my dorm room so I'm not worried about
security).

1. X Windows from RH 4.2 CD doesn't work with Multia's int. video?

I am having the weirdest problem with a RH 4.2 install.  Granted I know
nothing about Linux/RedHat/XWindows, but I followed the directions via
many sources on how to install RH 4.2 and X Windows.  Now, I am trying to
use XConfigurator to define my video.... I'm only using what came on the
mo'board!!!!  Even with Generic VGA StartX replies with:
"Server doesn't exist, can't continue"
"tried to use /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_VGA16"

What the heck!?!  I'm going as basic as I can on the vid driver and the
Multia is set to its most basic jumpers for video (I haven't changed them
either).

So, what gives????!!!???

Sincerely,
Peter
