upgrading the system.map file

Post by Seth Rothber » Tue, 26 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I upgraded my redhat 2.2.5 kernel to 2.2.12 and now when I reboot I get
messages that my some entries in my system.map file are looking for kernel
2.2.5. How do sync the  file with the kernel?

Thanks,
Seth

Copy it from one place to another (or copy your /proc/ksyms ..)

There is a file 'System.map' in /usr/src/linux
Copy it to wherever lilo.conf says it's the map
(in Debian it is /boot/System.map, don't know in RedHat)

See if you have a symbolic link in /boot from System.map to
the old map file.  If the new map file is also in /boot,
change the link.   If you upgraded the kernel, it should
be there.

The lilo "map" file is not the System.map file.  Please consult
the klogd(8) (and, perhaps, ps(1)) to see where the System.map
file is sought.

Thank you, that did the trick.

1. System.map not parseable as a System.map

After compiling and installing 2.2.14 with "bzlilo", I'm getting warning
messages such as:
Warning: /boot/System.map not parseable as a System.map
Warning: /usr/src/linux/System.map not parseable as a System.map
Warning: /System.map not parseable as a System.map

After recompiling, I copied the "System.map" file in
/usr/src/linux-2.2.14 to the above three places, but am still getting
the warnings.

My lilo.conf is:
boot=/dev/hda
map=/System.map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux

image=/vmlinuz
        label=linux
        read-only
        root=/dev/hdb6

other=/dev/hda1
        label=dos

Any ideas?
