Where can I find documentation for*3? I have Lamport's book, but it
is for*2e (I typed in an example from the book and it din't work!).
Where is some documentation? I couldn't find anything on my hard disk (there
is supposed to be a Local Guide).

I do not think*3 is out yet. (Latest version of Latex2e is dated on
June 1996) What makes you think you're using*3 ? What distribution of
TeX/LaTeX do you use ? My guess is that your command*refers to an old
*2.09, which do not understand the new \documentclass{} command, but
expect a \documentstyle{} comand in the preambule.

1. Latex versus Word. Does MS use Latex?

I am in this debate with this Windows guy who maintains
that Latex is virtually useless, too difficult to use
and results in ugly books.

Now I have looked into
    MS-DOS programmer's reference (up to version 6.0)
that I have, and as far as I can tell it looks like
latex with the standards font and almost nothing changed
from standard settings like :

section up front with Roman numerals
content in the front, not in the back
 the way tables are done

It looks remarkably like the Suse 7.0 manual that I have,
except for the tables.

So:
Has anybody pertinent information to what extent the
Open Source package TeX was and is being used at Microsoft?
