RedHat 4.2 install problem: dl_boot: mmap of /dev/zero failed

Post by Dwayne Jacques Fonten » Sat, 20 Sep 1997 04:00:00

hello,

I am trying to install RedHat 4.2 on a Pentium Pro 200 with 32MB RAM.
I have 3 hard drives and a CDROM.

I have installed this version of RedHat using this boot disk (that came
with it) on many different machines, but when I try to install on this
one, it gets just past the part when it says "initializing CDROM" or
something like that (right after it asks me to put the CDROM in and
hit OK) and then says:

dl_boot: mmap of /dev/zero failed
sending termination signal
resetting...

and the machine reboots.

I have searched for this error message everywhere I can think of
on the web and usenet, but I can't find it.

Anyone know what it means? I need to install Linux on this machine. :-(

thank you for your time,

Dwayne Fontenot

It may be that the CDROM is not optioned right, or incompatable. You
really didn't provide any real information so its hard to say for sure.
But if the machines are on a network, then do an NFS install and see if
it works. Otherwise you are going to have to troubleshoot the machine.

1. dl_boot: open /dev/zero failed

I'm not sure what I've done, but I believe that somehow
my /dev files were changed such that only root can login.

If any user attempts to get into my system they get the error:

dl_boot: open /dev/zero failed!

Does anyone have a solution? My first attempt will be to reinstall
the base linux distribution with the hopes that whatever was changed
or corrupted will be fixed..but I'd like to know what caused this.

Thanks for any suggestions or help.
