xfs problems on Redhat 6.0

Post by Zakir H. Sah » Sun, 12 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Hi....

I use xfs as a font server.  On a new machine running Redhat Linux 6.0,
when as an user, I invoke xfs as usual:

nohup xfs -config /etc/X11/fs/config -port 7000 &

xfs simply exits.  There are no error messages or anything anywhere.
I have made sure that everything in the config file is correct and I
have also tried to specify an error-file to log messages to (there is
never anything).

Things used to work like a charm on Redhat 4.2.  Any idea what is
going on?

Thanks.

Font handling and in particular the port xfs listens to is changed in
RH6.
Check your XF86Config file - what port is listed there? It likely says
something like:
   FontPath   "unix/:-1"

Why you want to start xfs seems strange btw...and not the "usual"
approach at all. I boot into runlevel 3 and at that point xfs starts on
it's own, by a symlink in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d:
S90xfs -> ../init.d/xfs

As non-root?

Quote:>nohup xfs -config /etc/X11/fs/config -port 7000 &

This is usually done as part of init. Does that not work either?

Try 'df' and see if filesystem where /tmp lives is not past the
reserved-for-root limit. Also, make sure your networking is in good
order.

1. Problems with xfs on RedHat 6.0

Dear Colleagues:

I am trying to use xfs on a PC running Redhat 6.0
to service a Sun 3/60 running Xkernel. My Sun boots
up fine. However at the end of initialization,
I get the following message:

failed to set default font path 'tcp/fontserver:7100/all'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

I used ps to check if xfs is running and it is. I used
the font directories in the catalogue and they seem
okay. I used fsinfo and it failed. I used netstat and
I do not see xfs listening on port 7100. I have used the
Xkernel config, the rpm config and various test configurations
and xfs does not work. At the suggestion of one of the
Xkernel contributors, I did a strace and things appeared fine.
If anyone can give me any insights into what is going wrong,
I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Andrew
