Kernel v2.0.30 will not compile

Post by Aveek Datt » Mon, 12 May 1997 04:00:00

The system:
        A new Cyrix pr200+ machine
        64 Megs of RAM
        3c509B-TPO Ethernet card
        2 GIG IDE HD
RedHat 4.1 freshly installed yesterday from NFS mount

The problem:
Got to the make zImage state of recompiling my kernel. I've
used all the default params and tried compiling as a '486' 'Pentium'
and 'PPro' and get the same problem. The following is my last compile,
which went well except this fatal error:

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.0.30/fs'
set -e; for i in minix ext2 fat msdos proc isofs nfs; do make -C $i; done
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.0.30/fs/minix'

-Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strength-reduce -pipe
-m486 -malign-loops=2 -malign-jumps=2 -malign-functions=2 -DCPU=686  -c
-o fsync.o fsync.c
fsync.c: In function `V2_sync_indirect':

fsync.c:243: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
fsync.c:243: for each function it appears in.)
fsync.c:243: parse error before ``'
fsync.c:240: warning: `ind_bh' might be used uninitialized in this function
fsync.c:241: warning: `rc' might be used uninitialized in this function
fsync.c:256: warning: `buf' might be used uninitialized in this function
make[3]: *** [fsync.o] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.0.30/fs/minix'

The solution:
If you got it, please email me. :) Thanks!!!

1. Linux kernel v2.0.30 and X Window freeze

Recently I compiled a new kernel (v.2.0.30) and copied the image to a
floppy. After booting I find I am unable to work satisfactorily in
X Windows, namely the system freezes and must be rebooted (with the
original kernel v.2.0.0). The window manager is fvwm95 v.2.0.41f.

Can anyone help me with this? Is there a problem with the kernel, or
the window manager, or (most likely) in the configuration?

All suggestions gratefully acknowledged,

Roger Young.
