Is this a graphical or a console login?  Can you provide more
information?  What are you typing, if anything?  Does the login work?

1. screen flashing at login?

after linux loads I get to the loging prompt and then my screen starts
flashing from blank screen to the prompt and back again, could it be my
grafx card? I am on a IMB aptiva 595 ,athlon 600mhz, 20.4gig hd, 128mb
ram, number nine sr9 8mb grafx card, ess solo1 sound card. can anyone help
me???
