How to diable "Ctrl-Alt-Del" from Normal Users?

Post by Chi-Jang Hua » Thu, 22 Feb 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I have installed Slackware Linux 3.0 on my PC.  I would like to diable
the "Ctrl-Alt-Del" from normal users to prevent them from rebooting, though
it will reboot the system nicely.  Is there any way to do this?  Any
suggestion is highly appreciated.

    Regards,

    --Chijang Huang.

Comment the ctlaltdel line from your /etc/inittab.

The shutdown I have (sysVinit) allows only root to reboot.
but in a /etc/shutdown.allow file I put the names of the users who are
allowed to reboot and they can, the others get: 'no authorized user logged in'

But does this work with "Ctrl-Alt-Del"?

When Ctrl-Alt-Del is depressed, init (process id=1) will spawn a child
which  executes 'reboot'.  So, the 'reboot'   process is run with root
permissions!

To  disable the 3-finger-salute completely,   just comment the line in
/etc/inittab which contains the reboot command.   I have no methods to
disable it for just a group of users.

I haven't found anything in the man page about that file.  Could you please
point me into the direction where I can find any info?

Disregard that posting - I had an old manpage (d*** "preformat" man pages of
Slackware!).

Look through /etc/inittab.  There's a line which tells it what to do
with ctrl-alt-del, and you can just comment that out.

Of course, even as root, you'll then have to explicitly type
shutdown -r now (or whatever) rather than use the deathgrip.
