kernel panic, no init found

kernel panic, no init found

Post by dick dij » Fri, 03 Nov 2000 18:47:31

Hello,

I messed around a litlle bit with LILO and now I have the following problem.

When I boot Linux, the status messages show like:

...
"Partition check"
...
"Freeing unused kernel memory"

But then (after "Freeing unused kernel memory"), I get:
"Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel"

and the system hangs...

When I boot from the Linux Bootdisk, go through the first questions and then
choose "Boot installed system", ( I have to supply the partition to boot
from, /dev/hdc1) the system comes up normally. So I think something in my
boot config is not quite right.

Does anyone know how to fix this, so I can boot from harddisk.

Thanks,
*

Post your lilo.conf file so we can see what it looks like. Also if
possible tell what changes you did to it.

1. RH 5.2 kernel upgrade "Kernel Panic: no init found"

I am upgrading my Redhat tp Kernel 2.2.13, I followed all the
directions from http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto//kernel-
2.2/kernel2.2-upgrade.html#toc5 and all works just fine until reboot
time.

When it boots the new kernel it gets to mounting all the devices, then
mounting the root filesystem read only, then the message:

Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

I read through all sorts of other posting about this message, but no
suggestion of init=/bin/sh or init=5 helps.

Thanks
Don
