Linux on Packard-Bell DX250 "Force 53CD" system?

Post by steve mcada » Thu, 25 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hi folks.  Finally got around to starting Linux install on my new(ly
scavenged) test system.  It's an older Packard-Bell multimedia system
they called the "Force 53CD".  Comes with 4m onboard ram, and a cdrom
that is (believe it or not!) connected to the sound card of all
places.

Anyway, I tried installing SuSE 5.3 and it couldn't find/use the
cdrom, so my install is halted for the moment.  Guess I could try a
couple different distributions, but I thought I'd see if anyone else
had contended with this particular wierdness first.  Takers anyone?
tia.

Hi Steve,

Don't yo have the SuSE book ??? ( I've got it with my 5.1 )
You can try several kernel-parameters at boot-time for soundcard-cdroms.
It's much to much to list them all now (more than 10 pages).
Perhaps you can post the type of soundcard and cdrom?

eg for the Mitsumi-cdrom : mcd=<addr>,<irq>[,<wait>]  wait: 1 -10 for
timeout of slow drives
                                              mcd=0x300,10,5

I also used an older PB system for my linux box, and it has a sound blaster
multimedia upgrade with the cd connected to the soundcard. I bought Red Hat
5.2, and it installed just fine.

Yes, I have it, but I was too STUPID to think of looking in it for
cdrom parameters.  DUH, slap forehead!  Thanks, will check it pronto.

Cool, I have 5.2 sitting around here somewhere in my pile of
distributions.  Prefer SuSE install, but frankly as soon as I get
Linux up and running the first thing I'm going to do is start ripping
pieces out until I find out how little I need to run, then start
building upward from a kernel source build.  Will try to find cd
parameters and if that fails will give 5.2 a shot.

Older non-IDE/SCSI CD-ROMs always used to connect to an adaptor card,
which was often integrated on the soundcard. Post the make of CD /
soundcard with a more appropriate title (e.g. "HELP: Installing SuSE
with non-IDE/SCSI CD-ROM") and I'm sure a SuSE expert will help if you
can't figure it out with the SuSE docs.

Basically, your boot kernel has to include support for whatever CD-ROM
interface that system uses.

Mark.

1. XFree86 and Packard-Bell 17" Monitor

Hi there,

I hav sussessfully installed Slackware96 on a Packard-Bell and Acer
computer with a 14" monitor. I recently upgraded to a Packard Bell with a
17" monitor. The docs are lousy, but I gather I am using a "S3 Inc ViRGE
PCI" system. I can glean the refresh rates etc, but I have no idea what the
chipset actually is! So I tried the old standby of choosing the SVGA
server. Startx fails with a message "not enough memory for 1600 x 1200
resolution". What is going on here? Can I fix it. the VGA server works ok,
but I don't want that low resolution. I will be happy with SVGA resolution,
but how can I get it??? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
