fdformat /dev/fd0H1440                  for a 3.5" disk in /dev/fd0 (Dos A:)
mformat a:                              requires the 'mtools'

Hope this helps,

The other post in this thread tells you how to do it. But I have a question:
Why would anyone flame you for this?

You're pretty much in the right group (c.o.l.setup may have been slightly
better), you only posted to one group and so what if it's a FAQ (which it
isn't).

Questions like this are what the newsgroups are for. So don't apologize
for using a valuable resource.

Just the next time someone asks this question, post the answer.

This sprit of cooperation is what make the Linux movement work so well.

Happy Linuxing....

Interesting.
I had tried using the mkdosfs /dev/fd0 command -- it starts off
working, but once I boot dos, and dos writes to the floppy,
then reboot linux, linux can no longer read that filesystem...

I prefer "mkfs -t msdos /dev/fd0" to "mformat a:". It does the same
but has a more Unix-like feel to it.

1. formating mac disk in prep for future Linux?

I know that is has been beaten to death already, but please take pitty
on a newbie!

I have just purchased a new 18 gig drive, and I am planning to install a
dual boot linux / OS 9 setup. I have not received my Yellow Dog CDs yet,
but I would like to go ahead and format the drive and begin using the
mac side if possible.

Is it possible to use the Apple drive set-up on the OS 9 CD to format
and partition the drive in the appropriate way for my future Linux
install ... and not have to re-format the whole thing later?

Please make replies as specific as possible, as I am a little shakey on
my HFS vs HFS+ vs A/UX etc.

Thanks very much for any advice.
