linuxconf - where in RH7.2

I'm wondering why linuxconf wasn't there after a stock
CD installation of Redhat Linux 7.2.

Any ideas? Has it been replaced by something different?

Yep, I had to do a Custom/Expert to get it off the Redhat cd.

Running Mandrake, cannot give you the Redhat Replacement name.

Linuxconf is quite large.. bloated.. buggy.. has been known to actually
cause security problems.  It's on the CD - it's just not installed by
default.  (this is my opinion)

You can access the variety of configuration options that Linuxconf
provides (and more - woohoo!) via "setup" (/usr/sbin/setup), Red Hat's
own setup utility.

Is there any "official" deprecation taking place?

It's rather unfortunate that there is not any attempt at cooperation
with other projects out there, notably WebMin, which has been growing
to become pretty functional.

I don't think so - it's still included with the distribution.  You just
have to go digging for it a bit.  A package will not usually get
deprecated until it's maintainers have bailed and is considered
outdated, demand falls through the floor, or a variety of other reasons
the distribution staff figures for.  *shrug*

I _think_ that most all Red Hat programs within the distribution have
some sort of in-house maintenance performed on the packages.  As one
would expect, Red Hat can't package and maintain everything.  But, I'm
sure if enough people griped and requested a certain package be included
with the next release of the distribution - it would find its way in there.

(definitely not my department)

I think it's on the second CD, and it installs to /sbin (because of the
numerous problems it had and created). It should have been placed in
/dev/null instead of on either CD.

Not yet. There are other tools that can do similar things (most notably,
pico, vi and emacs), but nothing that's all-in-one.

That is/was one of its biggest problems. It would be released with
configuration tools for a verions of bind and/or snedmail, and users would
have another version altogether. It had no error-checking for hihs and
would destroy configurations on-the-fly (at least now it has a "quit
nocheck" option, which still isn't enough).

It also had the bad habit of changing permissions, even in directories and
on files that I made up all by myself and had names that were nothing like
anything that already existed and would be in locations that no distro
ever put out. That caused me to drop it after I fixed the same problems
several dozen times on a single machine.

I was wondering the same and was told:
"
With regard to the linuxconf package, you do not have to re-install the entire
system in order to have this package. Here are the steps on how to install this
manually.

1. Insert / Mount the Red Hat 7.2 CD 2.
    # su -
    # mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

2. Install the linuxconf package.
    # rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/*linuxconf*
"
