how to disable screen blanking on virtual consoles

Post by Darcy Boe » Wed, 04 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I've got a server that keeps crashing, but the cause of the event
doesn't get logged.  And with the screen saver going, the 'panic'
information isn't visible.

How can I disable the screen saver?  I've got a better way to prevent
screen burn-in:  I leave the monitor off when I'm not at the machine.

It is usually set in your rc.* scripts, which in most implementations
reside in a subdirectory of /etc.  My RedHat system has them in
/etc/rc.d.  The executable is setterm, so grep your scripts for that,
and change it to 'setterm -blank 0' or just comment it out.

: information isn't visible.

Huh?  Any stuff which is being printed on the console should also be
recorded somewhere - look at /etc/syslog.conf to see where.  If you
have an application which doesn't syslog stuff (or use it's own
record files) then re-write it so it does.

For a console, setterm -blank 0 ought to do it.
