Changing BIOS Video setting in linux?

Are there any linux utils for changing BIOS settings?  Specifically, the video
setting from VGA<->Mono?   My VGA is w/ a fixed-frequency monitor, and I can't
get to BIOS if it boots up in that mode...

1. Changing Monitor & Video Settings in Linux

How do you change video resolution (e.g., from 800 x 600 to 1024 x768)
or monitor settings in Linux?  My friend who just installed Linux
needs to change his monitor and the video resolution.  I checked
linuxconf but didn't find anything there.
